Lord, I can’t stop sinning
I have been
spiritually slacking lately, I’ve just found myself confronted with a lot of
sin. Laziness being my biggest adversary.
Now I am not
about to start excusing sin, but I had to come to terms with some things the past
couple of weeks; I will not be sinless and sin is not the centre of my relationship
with God.
I read Romans
7 and in the last verse Paul says with the mind, he serves the law of God but with
the flesh the law of sin (Romans 7:25). This reminded me of the fact that my
flesh is not my friend. It will not willingly submit to the things of God and
sometimes I may fail to crucify it but, my Lord, He gives me grace to stand up
and try again. See, the mind and the flesh exist in in spite of each other,
which will always be the case, so do not be surprised when your flesh demands
certain things after God convicts you. Do not let the demands of your flesh separate
you from God, your shortcomings are nothing new to God, He does not care, and
they are not the centre of your relationship. He is the centre of the relationship,
and in times when you fall or you start to slide back, look to Him and He will
lift you out of that pit.
Sin is
inevitable, when we say Jesus overcome sin it wasn’t just that He being flesh
crucified His flesh entirely and remained righteous, it was that He overcame
the separation that sin causes in the children of God, He forgave people and drew
sinners, the most far gone of backsliders, to Himself. Sin wasn’t the biggest
tactic the serpent used in the garden, it was shame, for the first time Adam
and Eve found themselves embarrassed because they were naked. They saw that
they were wickedness in the face of righteousness, mere flesh in the face of a
perfect Holy God and they hid. For the first time ever, they wanted to be away
from God. Yet, in the same way that
Jesus seeks you out now after you fall, God went looking for them, even though
He knew what they did, and the fact that they were hiding.
Look, not
sinning isn’t the goal, Jesus is, focus on Him. The sin you are struggling with
now is a distraction, do not give in to it, continue to fight, but fight
knowing that God has already won the battle for you, fight knowing that He is
ahead of you. Fight knowing that falling for a mere moment isn’t the end of the
fight, but an opportunity for God to lift you up and strengthen you. So, every
time, you’re overcome with that desire, pray knowing that in this weak moment,
the Lord will show His strength. After you fall, repent and try again, knowing
that the Lord has forgiven you and wants to show you how to overcome this sin.
